The
introduction states ‘Ebenezer Morris (1801-1888) established an iron-foundry
business in Foundry Lane, Lewes, East Sussex in 1822. An ironmonger's shop and
house at 41/42 Cliffe High Street was added, and a branch was later opened in
Eastbourne, comprising a shop and a smaller works.’ There is also a short
article in the Eastbourne Local History Society (ELHS) Newsletter No9 (May
1973) by Mr. K. Wilkinson, which goes back to the origins of the foundry (1784)
before it was purchased by Ebenezer in 1822.
According to the website, the
Cliffe Foundry in Lewes closed in 1900 and any future casting work required was
sub-contracted out, which may explain the different 'MORRIS EASTBOURNE' font
types found.
