There are three George Courtney’s listed in the various censuses for Southwick, Shoreham; George (senior), born 1809, Ship’s Pilot, his son (George junior – the subject of this survey) born 1843, and George junior’s nephew, born 1869.
1843: Baptism in the Parish of New Shoreham, Sussex, George, son of George and Sarah Courtney. George senior is listed as a (ship’s) Pilot.
1861 April 7: George, 19, ‘visitor, engineer, apprentice’ is on board the 135-ton coastal trading brig ‘Two Sisters’ based at Shoreham. The ship’s master is Frederick Courtney (presumably George’s uncle), and on the night of the census the ship is moored at Pembrey Docks, Wales.
1874: George (aged 31) joins the Corinthian Masonic Lodge in Cubitt Town, East London.
1878 Post Office Directory of Sussex under ‘Engineers – Mechanical.’ George Courtney, Southwick, Brighton.
1881 census: 130 Albion Street, Southwick, New Shoreham. George (unmarried), 37, is living with his parents. He is listed as an Iron & Brass Founder, employing 21 men and 10 boys.
1882: Marriage at the Parish Church Woolbeding of George Courtney, 39, Engineer, of Southwick, to Emily Lydia West, 26, of Woolbeding, Sussex.

1890 July 8: The ‘Sussex Express, Surrey Standard, Weald of Kent Mail, Hants and County Advertiser’ - ‘Courtney & Birkett, Engineers & Yacht Builders.’
1891 census: George is now listed as a ‘Marine Engine and Yacht Builder.’ Therefore; I think we can date the gully grate prior to this date as he is no longer listed as either an ‘Iron Founder’ or ‘Engineer,’ and the only other George Courtney (his nephew), is recorded as an ‘Engine makers draughtsman’ (obviously working for his uncle).
1893 March 11: The ‘Sussex Express, Surrey Standard, Weald of Kent Mail, Hants and County Advertiser’ reports George Courtney as a member of the Southwick drainage committee.
1899: The Argus reported that George was standing for election to the Southwick Urban Council.
1900: George senior died.
1901 census: 6 Colebrook Road, Southwick, Shoreham, Sussex.
George Courtney, 58, Managing Director Yacht Company, Employer, born Sussex, Shoreham.
Emily Courtney, Wife, 44, born Sussex, Brighton.
1911 census: George Courtney, 68, listed as ‘Manager of Shipyards’ is now remarried to Alice (nee Brazier), 46, and lives at Shipyard, Bath Road, Lymington, Hampshire.
1921 census: as per 1911, only George is now listed as retired.
1930: COURTNEY George of The Anchorage, Bath Road, Lymington, Hampshire, died 15 April 1930. Probate Winchester 20 May to Alice Courtney widow. Effects £199.
